How It Started
The Love Walk is the brainchild and labor of love of our own PPJWC member, Helene Dameris. Breast cancer first hit close to home for her in 2004 when her sister-in-law was diagnosed with Stage-3 breast cancer. Then, about two years later, her close friend Julie was diagnosed. Through Julie, Helene learned of the leading breast cancer researcher Dr. Susan Love, who also lives and works in the community. Helene was so impressed by what she learned about Dr. Love, that when she read a flyer saying that Dr. Love's foundation was looking for volunteers to participate in a study of intraductal fluids of the milk ducts, Helene was more than willing. During the procedures, Helene asked Dr. Love all kinds of questions about her research. "I realized that if anyone could find the cause for breast cancer it was Dr. Love." Helene explains, "Then, BAM! Four ladies in Junior's got diagnosed, as well as my daughter's pre-school teacher, and I felt like I had to do something!" And one year later... the Love Walk.
On May 18, 2008, the first annual Love Walk marched through the streets of the Palisades with more than 450 people strong and it raised more than $50,000 for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation.
About Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is non-profit organization working to eradicate breast cancer and improve the quality of women's health through innovative research, education and advocacy. The goal of the Foundation is to identify the barriers to research, to create new solutions - and end breast cancer in our lifetime.
"Over the last decade, 2,000 breast cancer organizations have raised over $2 billion dollars for breast cancer research. Yet we still do not know what causes breast cancer or how to prevent it. At the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, we believe that to eradicate breast cancer we need to begin where breast cancer begins - in the breast ducts. The Foundation is engaging in an extraordinary opportunity to focus research on the breast ducts and understand how the breast works. With your support, we will determine how to prevent and eradicate breast cancer once and for all."
